Description
Darwen Market 1950s
Step back to the Darwen of the 1950s with this watercolour of the town’s bustling outdoor market. The picture holds memories for many, showing the scale and past importance of the open-air market at the heart of the community. Apparently, children used to run along the rooftops as late as the 1960s!
Look closely and you may spot some old favourites: the long-established Burton’s clothes shop, the red and cream Darwen buses, the Glass Shed at the end of the five-day Market Hall and the now demolished Administrative and Retail building on Croft St to the left.
What you’ll love
- A nostalgic scene that brings back memories of market days gone by
- Familiar landmarks to spot and talk about: Burton’s, the red and cream buses and the Glass Shed
