Description

Theatre Royal and St Peter’s Church, Darwen, c.1910

A panoramic view of Railway Road across the Market Square, a Darwen street scene that has changed a great deal over the years.

How the use of buildings has changed!

The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on the left was sold in 1969 for only £14,500 and became a store. Many will remember it as A & M Bargains, and today it is a Wetherspoons.

Next door stood the Theatre Royal, which later became a public house and has since been demolished.

Holker House, now the Heritage Centre, was built in the grand Italianate style. Many will remember it as the Adult Education Centre.

St Peter’s Church, built around 1828, adds depth and balance to the view, while the Victorian street furniture adds a great deal of charm to the town.
