Description
Great Harwood, Jubilee, Townsgate
A square with a story
Townsgate has always been the heart of the town, and this watercolour captures it beneath the Mercer Memorial Clock tower, the landmark that has watched over generations of local life.
Towngate has long served as a central hub for local festivities. During Jubilee and Charter celebrations, children’s rides were set up beneath the clock, and the square filled with music, colour and families making memories in the shadow of the tower.
Every year on August 21st is the Crying of the Fair, the Town Crier and the Civic Society gather on the Town Square at Towngate to re-dedicate the historic market charter granted by Edward III in 1338. Nearly seven centuries on, the tradition is still going strong.
